Hey everybody,

For this column, we came up with something a little different. Myself (Bill Hudson) and my guitar partner and fellow UG columnist John Slaughter are working on a new project, called Coldera, which we're gonna release sometime in 2010.

This is an instrumental hard rock/heavy metal project we've been planning on doing for many years, but our hectic schedules kinda kept us from being able to do it. Now we're happy to be working 100% on it and hope you guys will like it when it comes up.

We wanna give you guys a little preview of our first song, entitled Melodicus Counterpointus, along with two different tabs for it, Bill's and John's parts.

This is not the entire song, just a minute and a half preview of it, but we figured it would be a good idea for you guys to have a good taste of it, plus to have something cool to study.

This song is really simple as far as the structure goes. We always try to stick to verse/chorus structures, despite writing instrumental music.

The intro/verse and chorus are all in the same key, F# aeolian (A major). Then we switch to B aeolian (D major) during the solo section.

Notice that we trade off the melody during the verse and harmonize it at the end. It gives it a pretty cool effect that we're gonna be using a lot in our music.

Nothing too complicated as far as the notes go and the construction of the parts. The chord progressions are really straight forward as well.

So… here are the tabs for download:

Download Bill Hudson's Parts
Download John Slaughter's Parts

Hope you guys enjoy it… and see you next month!

Rock on!
Bill Hudson & John Slaughter

Some nice solos, but nothing really caught my ear as far as melody or hooks etc.

yeah... too mythical sounding for my taste.

Kanthras :

Weird title, considering there's not much in the way of interesting counterpoint going on..
Either way, it's a nice instrumental but not really my thing.

Thats what I thinking, I didn't really see many independant melodies going on there, so possibly a poor song title, however still sounded great, looking forward to the whole song

I was thinking the same thing myself... no counterpoint... although I did like the playing.

why not just put both guitar parts in one file?

Definitely hard to make a stand out instrumental band considering no lyrics and all, but I'll give you some props on this. Unfortunately though, as aforementioned, nothing that really stands out.

Not only the things that these people said, but the Latin word for counterpoint is contrapunctum, is it not? Punctus contrapunctum? Point against point?

You must be new to wordplay.
