he has swagger like mick jagger, and can play his ass off. reminds me a lot of slash. i hear ppl compare him to zack wylde a lot but he's in a different playing category. he's a rock guy, not a metal guy. also have seen him live and he blew me away POSTED: 03/12/2011 - 01:02 am / quote |

Just saw him live 3 days ago...Probably one of the worst guitarist's I've ever seen. If you havent seen him live, then see if you can find a video of him playing his 5 min solo on youtube or something...Disgusting... POSTED: 03/13/2011 - 11:03 am / quote |

@Magnflcoamar. You got to love haters. The people who sit at home bad mouthing players they wish they could be. Sal plays arenas every night while you sit in your bedroom plugging away at a career you will never have. I've been a session guy in New York City for a few years. I have seen this band live, and they are great. Sal is especially great. Sal is what the music industry calls a character player. Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Slash, Dimebag, and many more. They are character players. They are different and cool. Sal can tear up a guitar, but he's also cool, he's a star. People need to embrace talented new artists, not be jealous and try to bring them down. I'm a big fan, and can't wait to see how big this guy is going to get. Does someone have to die for them to become good or legendary nowadays? You haters need to get real. When you can fill the same size stage as he can, than maybe have an opinion. While I do like the band, I'm gonna have to draw the line at the jealousy bit... I will admit that Sal has some decent chops and definitely seems to know what he's talking about, but to be fair the solo he plays live between songs seems to repeat itself and thus gets boring pretty quick (at least he's better at guitar than me, I'll say that). Not only that, it seems pretty obvious that at this point, he's incapable of replicating the Porn Star Dancing solo live (after all, Zakk Wylde did play it on the album).
That said (and as previously stated this is coming from a MDD fan), I really wish people would quit worshiping this guy as though he were Hendrix, Petrucci, Satriani, or Vai because it's blatantly obvious that he's the furthest thing from that level... POSTED: 03/13/2011 - 07:59 pm / quote |

@rocknrolldude43. That's where you are wrong though (in my opinion). Can you compare Jimmy Page to Steve Vai? Can you compare Petrucci to Keith Richards? Can you compare Satriani to Joe Perry? Or how about Herman Li compared to Richie Sambora? That's my point. There is the players that have style and chops - those are the guys we all grew up listening to. And then there is the prog rock guys.
Sal has great chops, he's young, and he's got a style. Anybody can sit there for hours and practise playing at 200bpm to a mentronome. This guy has feel, chops, and an attitude to his playing. I have seen them jam, and if you see, he plays something different every night. It's all improv. You will see him play until the singer comes back on stage. He just plays and plays until their singer comes back. YOU try playing something different every night, right off the top of your head in front of an arena full of people until the singer of the band comes back. It's pretty impressive. But again, to each his own.
I just think people should look at everything before dissing. Oh and as for the Zakk solo. That I've seen him change every night as well, and heard Zakk talking about how he told him to change it up and rip it up every night. To play his own thing.

The point I was trying to make is that while Sal is a skilled guitarist and seems to know his shit, a lot of MDD fans seem to be overhyping his playing abilty by acting as though he were a gift from God (besides, he never claimed to be on par with the guitarists I mentioned earlier). He also seems to garner more female attention than the rest of his bandmates, so IMO that likely has quite a bit to do with said hype.
That said, I do believe that he has potential (though I seriously doubt he'll suddenly become the next Hendrix overnight)- in all likelihood he's intent on improving his chops (besides, we as guitarists all are, right?), I just wish the solo he played between songs was less repetitive, then it would be more interesting to listen to IMO. he definitely seems to love what he does (which also includes really connecting with the fans, this lesson definitely seems to reflect that IMO- as did the time when someone recently asked him on his Facebook page about the gear he uses, to which he replied about 20 minutes), can't blame him for that.
And I do agree, people should examine the facts before blindly bashing things they hate. I used to do the same thing with rap music as a whole (based off all the "gangsta rap" bullshit we hear nowadays), but when I took the time to check out some old rap I realized that I was only making myself look like an ignorant *******. Wow that was actually really good, he should play it like that more often.
I agree with you about him having a good voice too- case in point, you can clearly hear him during the intro, post-chorus, and bridge of Can't Forget You.
Also I have a tab of Every Lie pending for anyone who's interested. If you could vote for its approval and give your honest opinion on it I'd really appreciate that. POSTED: 03/13/2011 - 10:25 pm / quote |

HOLY SHIT. if ur wondering why people are talking so much about Sal. here is a good reason. i just check out some of his solo record stuff. wow he's versatile.
go www.myspace.com/salcozcosta
check out a song called "caroline". hes actually singing lead in it as well. there is a cool solo in it. when i read up about it, i found out that it's a patch chord solo. he pulls the patch chord out of his guitar, and plays a solo. you have to hear it.
but another one that really caught my ear is called "flamjazz". it's a jazzy latin instrumental that has some really different licks. all clean guitar. just a lot of soul.
his catalogue and versitility is pretty damn impressive. POSTED: 03/14/2011 - 11:45 am / quote |

I kind of know him. Well I did know him. We went to elementary school together. I always remember him as a cello player. He won a music award at the end of grade 8 for best musician. Last I heard he was in University studying spanish guitar or jazz or something like that. Proud to see him doing what he's doing now. POSTED: 03/14/2011 - 12:52 pm / quote |
