Hey guys,

Bill Hudson here. In this first column, I'll be teaching you guys how to play the guitar solo for "Create A Dream", by my new band Written In Blood.

This isn't particularly a hard solo to play, but it has what a believe to be a good balance of different techniques and phrasing that make a good guitar solo for the hard rock/heavy metal style.

The key varies between E aeolian (G major scale) and E minor (or what some would call harmonic minor. I disagree with that term, but that will be discussed at a later time, in a later column), meaning I'll be using both major seventh (D#) and minor seventh (D) on this solo.

On a few occasions, I'm throwing in the blue note (A#) to get a somewhat bluesy sound.

The chord progression underneath it is the classic VI IV V metal progression: Em, C, D.

Notice my guitar is tuned a whole step down (D A F C G D), but I'm referring to the notes as if it was tuned to standard.

how do you manage to get your speed up to that level, I can play a dragonforce solo but at 3/4ths of the speed. I need the secret ingredient.

It kinda describes partials in the chord progression. lol But you can probably find someone who can explain it better.

I like the video and the song and have also checked the band and they are really good. This guy just needs to get off his high horse and not try to sound like a musical genius because some of the things he says in his description are not entirely correct.

It relates to the steps or whatever you may call it of the scale you're in, the Vs, Is and Xs are roman numerals (I being one, V being five and so on).

So you have a scale, in this example right here apparently G major (G A H C D E F#) and you build a chord progression with the notes in:

Take the VI, sixth chord of the scale which is E (although the dude plays Eminor, the parallel), the IV, the fourth chord of the scale which is, as already said, C and V, the fifth chord of the scale - D. That equals a classic progression composed of Em - C - D (VI IV V).
