I never liked Jrock before I saw these guys on TOC but my mind is changed. I have to say, i thought D'espairsRay was probably the best. POSTED: 05/07/2008 - 10:09 pm / quote |

ugh. now jrock is becoming mainstream. i wish something that i have enjoyed for so long could stay underground in america :S BEAT CRUSADERS FTW. however, im very happy to see mucc getting out there more and more. POSTED: 05/07/2008 - 11:40 pm / quote |

He said "among the best", and only that he thinks so personally.
Anyway, great to see this on UG! Not really into D'Espairs or Underneath but MUCC is seriously one of the most creative bands I've ever experienced. They often mix more genres and instruments in one song than most bands do in 20 years, not to mention they write very solid songs. And out of these three they are by far the least image-concious, they just play music.
I hope this won't bring the american work ethic of "making the most money possible with the least effort possible" into japanese bands. Generally the japanese seem to take pride in their work and strive to be good at it, which is probably why I like so many japanese bands.
Oh and japanese bassists rule btw! POSTED: 05/08/2008 - 12:02 pm / quote |

i love you, ultimate guitar!!! I'm gonna major in Japanese and this is the best inspiration yet!!! Where is dir en grey and uverworld? Oh well, great coverage! Especially with no English, so the Japanese bands can keep top the original flavor. POSTED: 05/08/2008 - 09:37 pm / quote |

If you haven't heard of em, definately check em out. Most versatile stuff I've heard in some time. Abingdon Boys School is pretty mint as well. POSTED: 05/09/2008 - 05:00 pm / quote |

Hell yes! I'm a big Gazetto fan, I've done a bunch of solo covers by them on my youtube channel... POSTED: 05/09/2008 - 05:03 pm / quote |

The GazettE are actually one of my favorite bands. One of my freinds started a petition to get them to come over to America and tour.
shadowsfallmang wrote:
they seem kind of pretentious and cocky... |
It is almost impossible to translate Japanese into English because they have many different words to imply different things, where as in English, everything would be covered by one word, so it's possible that a lot of that was just translating issues. But you'd also see some of that from almost any band from America or England or whereever anyway, so... whatever. POSTED: 05/10/2008 - 04:59 am / quote |

This was a really good interview, I'm glad UG interviewed a Japanese band. Ok, Dir en Grey is a good band and everything, but these guys a pretty good too. I don't the point of posting one band is better than others. It's like posting on any American band interview that Megadeath or Metallica is better. It's pointless and stupid.
But enough complaining, good job UG! Is there nothing Amy can't do? POSTED: 05/10/2008 - 11:38 am / quote |

Jeez, this interview sucked. Those guys looked like they didn't even want to be there. And I hate how she's called them the J-rock revolution and I also hate how they are lumped together as if they are essentially the same band. POSTED: 05/11/2008 - 11:50 am / quote |

the GazettE are awesome, and so are Abingdon Boys School, but Dir En Gray, D'espairsRay, Due le Quartz, Nightmare are really good as well. But yeah, there are alot of Japanese bands out there deserve recognition, I'm not even going to bother to start listing. And why can't these bands come to New Zealand! =[ I don't think we will ever get Jrock over here. I can only hope I guess.
Btw, wow at this being on UG. POSTED: 05/13/2008 - 03:11 am / quote |

no offense but majority of bands that play in taste of chaos suck, thats just my opinion, as well as the jrock bands that performed on that tour, truth be told you'd be really close minded to call any of these bands really awesome, even i think Dir En Grey sucks anus, but like i said its my opinion.
as for the guy who said "legendary X-Japan" props to him, cuz thats the band that really boosted JRock, but other than that there's more japanese bands than on TOC that tour around america, especially underground bands as well. dont be so shocked cuz its actually nothing new, most JRock is passed off as visual kei, which is way different now than what it was before. but V-kei is only a subgenre. real JRock isnt like these bands at all. so dont be mislead by TOC. POSTED: 05/13/2008 - 03:51 pm / quote |
RockinSamurai :
and btw Jrock isnt just "industrial to alternative" there's a wide variety in the j-music, such as punk, blues, rockabilly, and even metal. POSTED: 05/13/2008 - 03:53 pm / quote |
Aziraphale :
What I like the most about the term J-rock is that it's genreless. Most japanese bands are too versatile anyway to be labeled as punk, metal, funk, ska whatever, they usually mix any number of styles. Just look at MUCC or the GazettE. But all these bands, from Diru to L'Arc~en~Ciel to An Café to Acid Black Cherry, they're all just J-rock. It's wonderful not having all these genre-battles infesting this kind of music. mucc was great dancing around in their "dresses". they sounded a bit grungy in a good way. i thought that the underneath were surprisingly good though. they had some headbanging riffs which were really heavy. POSTED: 05/28/2008 - 01:49 am / quote |

To begin with, you can't really compare these bands by saying that this and that is better than this and that. Personally, all JRock bands sound unique. But, again, people are entitled to their own opinions.
I just appreciate that I had the opportunity to listen to these guys live. Hopefully, we'll be able to bring more JRock bands here in the future.
