For naysayers of Guitar Hero or Rock Band, Inspired Instruments has developed a product that is geared toward individuals who want to take their traditional playing to the next level while still maintaining a game-playing feel.

You Rock Guitar, which provided demos at its booth periodically at NAMM 2010, features a full-sized neck and “strings” to give players a more accurate representation of guitar playing. The booth lured many a passing attendant, including the likes of Nuno Bettencourt and Peter Tork.

Check out www.yourockguitar.com for more information on what could possibly be the next craze in music games.

i want to know how this works for GH/RB. ie how do does he know what fret and string to play from such a simple interface as GH/RB?

Probably the same way the 80's digital guitars worked...sensors in the fretboard that are sensitive to pressure

I do not know why anyone wants to emulate the electric guitar, while everyone has access to real guitars, which are obviously better.

Its a cool idea but i think it would reinforce some peoples attitude and by playing rock band you are learning to play guitar.

I like the composing aspect of it for the travelling musican, just plug in the head phones and away you go. Sounds groovy.

No headstock? So if you want to use it to write a song and it goes out of tune, tough? This was made for game use, they just had to be different without taking everything into consideration.

They're not actually strings. It can't go out of tune, it's a computer.

You bunch of old-farts---the people on this comments section are so out-of-touch...

Do you guys have any idea how many kids have picked up real guitars, taken lessons, and are making music because of games like GH/RB? Seems every kid in my neighborhood is learning and starting bands. These games are fantastic for getting youth into learning real instruments. Ask any teaching guitar instructor and he'll tell you the same about his students.

I see this product as just another bridge between the games and real instruments.

btw- i've been playing 20 years, consider myself pretty advanced, toured internationally, etc., and I love getting a few friends together a couple 12 packs and playing these games till 3AM on a weekend. It's called FUN people! Get over yourselves.

I know. Took me about half a year to get my dad to realize that Guitar Hero is "just a game!" 'Course...After seeing the idea recycled at least three times, I don't feel much motivation to try this either lol

I don't know what to think about this. It seems like they're trying to take away from [insert subject here] playing a real instrument and replacing it with an electronic device. I'm all for these games and whatnot, but they need to stop trying to replace instruments with electronic copies of them. There is no electronic device that I know of (excluding a keyboard, and even they have their faults) that can either emulate or teach you to correctly play any instrument. There are just too many aspects to replicate. They need to focus more on improving the game experience for people that can actually play an instrument and also inspire non-musicians to pick up a real instrument. I almost hate playing those games because of how inaccurate they are compared to an actual instrument.

Why are they trying to bridge a gap between stupid video games and the actually beauty of a real instrument?
Why!?

Because they have people that say digital sound is better when it is obviously not that way?

Look people. There will always people out there that have no apptitude for music. Often time these people still love music and would love a way to interact on a deeper level with their favorite band or song (much the way musicians do).

It's wrong for us to assume that because we do things one way that things shouldn't change. I know plenty of people that have started playing these games and it turned them on to playing for real and some of these are people who have never had the slightest desire to play an instrument before that.

I guess what I'm saying is, we all know that playing real instruments is great but not everyone can do it. These games provide a viable way for bands to not only sell their music (duh!) but let fans dream of being the lead guitarist in their favorite band. Sounds like a win-win to me!

If you actually read the website, this toy plays as both a guitar hero controler and a real guitar; and it can also be used as a MIDI controller, meaning guitarists now have access to a simple and cost effective MIDI interface that will allow us all sound design options keyboard players have had since the mid 80's. If, instead of shouting ZOMGNOGUITARHERO at the top of your lungs, you actually looked into the product you'd see that, in addition to being a video game controler it is something of a real instrument; basically what a MIDI keyboard is to a piano. And, since no-one here has gone on record as saying "dont play a midi keyboard play an acoustic piano" you should not be so against a digital guitar.

its not a real guitar. it doesnt use strings. it wont go out of tune. ever.

regardless, its still a retarded idea.

And,

I think this is a really important point- if this thing is an effective MIDI controller, it could be really useful for guitarists trying to lay down a synth path or something on a recording. I'd be curious to know if this thing can be used with custom samples and tunings...

But to all the naysayers: Relax. Stop thinking of it as a guitar. That's not truely what it is, and it's definitely not going to replace a real guitar. The technology just isn't there yet.

This seems like a great idea, especially the MIDI part, and honestly I love playing guitar hero with a bunch of friends and so on. But come on, stop trying to build your bridge between the two!! One guy said we are all old farts well I'm 14, in the videogame age. I remember an interview saying this is a guitar with training wheels, if you don't fret properly it fixes it for you and etc. But this means this new generation of children will just be a bunch of people riding on training wheels. In order to play properly you have to realize your mistakes and how to improve them, not have a computer do it for you. Also, a generation of guitarists without callouses of any kind xD????

sry but to me this 'guitar' just seems .. gay. either you're a nerdy guitar-hero-player or you get your ass up and start playing a real guitar.

killeraxeboy :

would be good if guitar hero or rock band were slightly more complex than just 5 notes, if the games were more like playing a reel guitar then it would really help learning.

as for the 'aspect of it for the travelling musican' can't you just get those mini amps and plug headphones into that. i know you don't get loads of different sound effects but if it's just for practicing then it doesn't matter that much.

I think GH just has one advantage. A couple years ago, when I told someone that I mainly listen to ´old´ music, he called me crazy. But since GH and RB, more and more friends started to listen to the music in the games, and they thought 'hey, that's actually really good music!'. When I'm at someones house, I hear more and more real music, instead of 'come in the club, bitch move your ass, make me wanna rock' and that kind of nonsense.

Besides that, I hate GH.

i dont think kids should just start playing guitar because of a video game and they want to be like those people, they should start because they like the way it sounds. i am 15 years old and i've been playing real guitar for about 2 years, and yes i do like playing rockband or guitar hero with some friends once in a while, but i don't think real guitar and guitar hero should be combined or confused with eachother at all

I am very interested in this, I've been wanting a MIDI guitar and looks like this thing might actually be one of the best.

I could care less about it being used in guitar hero or as a real guitar. Having a good MIDI guitar is what makes this really shine imo.

Along the top of the finger board there's colors over the frets that are the typical five colors for those games; I also think I noticed actual position markers mixed in with the colors as well. He was playing on the "high e string" when he was playing rock band in the video so I'm assuming you can use any string you want.

These folks have been in the musical instrument industry for a long time working with and creating some of the most phenomenal instruments from the 1980's through the 1990's. They have spent the last few years and nearly a million dollars devoting all their efforts to bringing a new paradigm to aspiring musicians.

Knocking someone's product before you ever lay your hands on it and using profanity just demonstrates your personal ignorance and immaturity. Nobody will force you to buy it so shut your pie holes and grow up....
