Gibson certainly has no intention of ceasing production on classics like the Les Paul, but the legendary company is moving forward with technology. The latest example of this venture is the Firebird X, which includes such features as a noise-canceling technology, over 2,000 pickup combinations, and the ability to create sounds with an analog feel. Let’s not forget that it also can tune itself.
In this video clip, UGTV receives a thorough demo of the cutting-edge Firebird X.
Cool idea IF you're into effects.
Doesn't seem all that practical though for a guitarist.
Seems like it's aimed at a specific audience. Maybe it'll take off in Asian countries? Japan is pretty technology oriented so maybe it'll be big there.
Christ, so many haters. Personally I think it's wonderfull. I'd never buy one myself and i think regular guitars are more worthwhile than this (At this current state of time, and i agree it doesn't look amazing) but it's still a great innovation and a step forward within the guitar industry, one that is moving on and evolving. As much as some people hate it we need to accept the fact that technology is evolving faster and faster and is being intergrated into almost everything. When I see people complaining that it's stupid or not needed (The firebird x) all i see are some old folks still stuck in the past refusing to accept it simply because it's new.
The same thing happened with other technological advances, particually television and video game media.

This is mostly true, but we don't need crazy innovation for musical instruments besides things that might actually help us. Nobody cares if you can have 2000 pickup combinations programmed into your guitar. While I do think that the self tuning thing is cool, all of the effects and other crap that make this guitar $6000 will never really take off, imo.
Soon they will come with a button for turning sweep picking on and off.. you will only have to play one note, and then the guitar will play the whole arpeggio.. LAME!

xD I'd buy that , i suck at sweep picking. *joke of course
the thing is... guitar has to be a guitar, it has to sound as a guitar, it has to be made out of wood and it has not to be a pentium 4 with a crappy look
i cant believe gibson has hopes on this guitar starting by how it looks, i mean the firebird was already somewhat ugly before they put all that technology in it, now i cant even watch it, i just hope these kind of guitars dont get succesful. 2000 pickup combinations? why? when i get a sound i like i stick with it and most guitarrists nowaday make the same, thats why every guitarist has its own sound and is recognizible
Ok, this is not a new concept, the technology is just changed. Aria and Ibanez both tried this in the late 70's early 80's. They both abandonded the concept pretty quickly. I was watching this and thinking, I can get all the same sounds using my effects board(Boss GT-10)...for about $2000 less. Also, that thing is butt ugly.
Also, though I'm taking into account the fact that I'm listening through my crappy computer speakers, that thing sounds like crap.
I can see why it's cool and all, and I respect that they're trying to make life easier by using technology very much like this, but it's not my cup of tea, maybe if I tried one my opinion might change slightly but it just feels like you're taking away or ruining something that was fine before.
We buy guitars because we like the feel, sound, the shape, they style, the wiring etc. The same goes for amps, combos, pedals, capos and finger slides and what not and all of these things together represents your own little personal set up. That's what sounds great to me, not "I like to use pickup combination 500/2000+ set with a chorus and delay on my Gibson Firebird X in terms of amps, I use any big thing..."

That said, you do have a veyr good point, technology does improve and it can't really do anything but improve. If it didn't need to be improved people would be out of their jobs and stuff. I don't anyone on this page will buy one personally we know full well it's not what we're into! I just really don't like the idea of a guitar that tunes itself, and a noise reducer... That just sort of hits people like "what!?". Usually, if your guitar is out of tune, you tune it by ear, to a tuning track or a tuner manually and if there's noise you reduce it manually as well by improving something like your pikcing etc. I think when people come out with technology like this where you don't need to worry about that anymore, guitarists get pissy because they've spent to improve those. At the end of the day, the guys who do this technology are just doing their jobs, it's up to new buyers etc. to be the judge. I say let's not get too worked up about this, if we don't like it, we won't buy it.
