This is the band that got me into guitar and metal, but now I have moved on to heavy music, deathcore grindcore mathcore. Even though they are not as heavy as they once were, they are still admirable by me.

I'm the same. I think they're definately very creative and they've got their own sound, but that's about it. Not really a fan of any of the vocalists, the soundscape is pretty cluttered and they might be a bit ovverrated instrumentally. The fact that they had the balls to talk down on Dream Theater was pretty irritating aswell. It's ok not to like a band, but it's a different thing to claim to be better than that band, aswell as call them names like gay and fags. I still think Mastodon have absolutely nothing on DT.

Mastodon is freaking insane, in my opinion they are sort of like this generations zeppelin....just my opinion though

I agree. its great they got there owne sound. They are okej.But DT is relly something else! Mastadon has nothing close to DT

I like this song. Reminds me of Genghis Tron.
Of course, I prefer Genghis, but it's a damn good song.
I might actually buy this album.

ya, with all the hype that UG is giving it, i was kinda thinking that this band would be horrible. But now that i've listened to it, theyre mediocre. They might have some prog influences here and there, but they really dont open ur mind to new sonic possibilities... Divinations is really just a modern metal song, with a solo that's just basically the main theme in tremolo. WHOOPEE! These men have blown my mind.

I like the irony in all the DT comments on here. Mastodon is a great band with a good musical vision. I dont prefer DT because their lyrics are cliche and lack creativity but its funny that people say its wrong to compare bands and follow with "they are no where near as good as DT"

mastodon is one the most original and evolving band out there and I LOVE IT! definately one of my favorite bands, they make some amazing and some amazingly f'd up videos

The thing is that Mastodon badmouthed DT big time in an interview, claiming themselves to be so much better and cooler, which is why a lot of people have picked sides on the matter.

Well, even if you think Mastodon's "okay", it should still be considered a crime to say they're anything below that. I saw them live and it was damn near one of the best shows I'd ever seen before. Brent is easily one of the best guitarists of this generation, maybe not in skill, but certainly in songwriting and creativity.

Honestly I think it's hard to hear Mastodon clearly when you're stuffing your ears with their interviews. Personalities aside, they make great music, it just takes repeat listens to appreciate. As for Dream Theater, they're amazing technically but I find their sound quite robotic.

if they made this album with just the czar and the last baron i would still love it... those two songs are about 25 minutes in length together.... could honestly be an album right there... but those songs are apart of this great story the album tells... this is the most sound concept album ive ever heard... i listen to king crimson, pink floyd, tool, the mars volta, radiohead... you name it when it comes to concept albums and i listen to it... this is the best concept album ever made.

DT is just boring compared to Mastodon. This is awesome and Blood Mountain is kick ass album too. I haven't got CTS yet though

Geez, its depressing how many of the people on here dont like it. and as far as DT theyre skilled but boring were as Mastodon is actually quite original.

singing does take some getting used to though, ill admit. one thing to keep in mind though was that one every other album it was worse.

DT = Skill

Mastodon = Better musicianship in terms of songwriting

DT could outdo all of them on their respective instruments, besides maybe Brann on drums (that dude is a drum god), but Mastodon just writes better and more interesting music. The reason that Mastodon is an innovator is because they took such an odd perspective at metal back when they first started. I mean come on, jazz fused with progressive grindcore? Wtf? But it worked. And now they have a sound completely separate from anyone else. You listen to either of these bands and you cannot mistake them for anything else.

But when I listen to DT, I ususally think "That was a ridiculous solo" or "Holy crap, that drum part is complicated Shit."

I listen to Mastodon and think "That song kicked major ASS."

That's the difference.

not to sound like im hating on this band, but i believe the new album was highly exagerated, not that it was bad. in fact the album was far from bad. but it was made out to be the most epic and altering album of all time. and it curtainly is far from that. but this song kicks ass, as i said, im not bashing them
