i love the album and i think its a great step in the right direction. im glad to see that some people stil make interesting music.
besides if art were loved by everybody it wouldnt be art. it would be something else. but personal reactions and interpretations are what make music good.

His music is in the market, he is trying to make a profit. In the free market the customer is king. Who am I to say that I dislike his music? I am the customer and part of his targeted audience. If his music displeased every customer he wouldn't be a professional musician very long.

Actually, I thought it was interesting and i'm by no means a huge S.O.A.D. fan (in fact had never even heard of Serj untill he released "Elect the Dead")..I think Serj is a very creative and talented musician, who above anything else, makes music that reflects that. Someone else posted saying that he had other artists make the videos for his album, which is cool to see how different people in the visual arts field interpret his songs. So I say props to Serj, and keep on doing your own thing!

So this video may not be living up to your standards and expectations but then again why should it, why are you even bothering to watch it if you don't like the music. Oh and by the way i like this video, its not crap its different and its someones view. What serj did was got different directors for each of the videos and that way he could create something different and more unique than what we see normally. I think that is a great idea and it provides us with 12 different styles
(theres 12 song and 12 videos if u didnt work that out already).

Yes, some of his songs do sound very similar but that is because he has his own style. At least he isn't copying another artists style. And for the person who basically said his cd sucked because he made it entirely by himself... As I sit here looking on the inside of the cd case it says on quite a few of the songs that John Dolmayan did the drums. If you are upset over the video being called beethoven's ****, the cd says "Beethoven's C***"... a slight difference if you ask me.
Yes I think Serj is a musical genius, but I think his music is missing Daron's and Shavo's touch. I wish System would come back but I don't want to rush (in my opinon) greatness.

Not the best song ever...but I think it'd grow on me if I listened to it a few times. I'm still unclear about the lyrics, but I only listened once so that probabaly doesn'tamout to much aha. id just like to say that i own all of systems work and the limited edition copy of elect the dead (thats his album for all you dumb asses) and when scars on broadway release there album i will also own that (once again for you dumb asses scars on broadway is daron and john new band)
but that not my main point that is the fact that serj did not produce the videos for his albums. he sent the songs off to different directors and told them to interperet them in their own way.
so dont have a go at serj for something that he didnt create.
and personaly i love every single one of the videos and songs

It is a lot different from SOAD's stuff, its less heavy and more melodic. he places more emphasis on the vocals in this album.
For all the people that say its sounds just like SOAD, well he IS THEIR MAIN SONGWRITER alongside daron. He said that there was many things he wanted to do with system, but couldnt because it didnt fit them or their music.
By the way, Serj said thats he will try to get a video for every song, using, as many have said, different directors.

Anyway, love the song, love the man, love the album. I wish people could see him as more than just the singer for SOAD, he's really great on his own. I dare say I like this album better than Hypnotize (and System is my favorite band).
Also I don't understand the similarities between this and SOAD (other than Serj's vocals, and like KingCheesehead said, the part that sounds like Streamline). SOAD's music was more guitar based and this is more piano/strings based. It flows differently and has a different vibe. Then again, we're all different, and we hear and see things differently. But that's just my opinion.

I'm a big SOAD fan and I love Serj, but this song (and most of his new cd) really is terrible. I can't see why everyone's jumping on the "IT'S MUSIC YOU HAVE TO APPRECIATE IT REGUARDLESS OF ITS QUALITY, MUSIC IS HARD" bandwagon. Sure I appreciate him as a musician, and it's obviously hard to mix your own shit in a studio. but when musicians like Trent Reznor do it almost exclusively with much better results, it's hard not to be disappointed. Serj wastes most of his powerful voice on falsetto crap and his pot-inspired lyrics, when he could be attracting new fans with better music. Serj has always been a political and social guy. Even as a teenager he took part in the Armenian Youth Federation, and was involved in protests. He hasn't jumped on the bandwagon every other band has so far (like the Dixie Chicks as you mentioned). He's ALWAYS been speaking his mind about politics and social issues. Same with SOAD, they've had some political lyrics ever since they were formed (look at early demo songs such as Temper).
Not trying to be a bitch, but I'm just saying he was already doing this before other bands decided it was cool to bash the white house.

i could be wrong but i think the reason that a lot of people dont like Serj's new material is that we are all fans of rock... Agreed everyone. Now i am a huge fan of Serj and i love his new album more and more with each listen. This would likely happen to everyone because at first i only liked it because of the name behind it but now im in love with it.
However as Serj himself said this was not initially planned to be a rock album and he doesnt plan on a new rock album.
Listening to it you can tell by the different styles in different songs. "empty Walls" ok clearly rock, "Jeffery are you listening" thats more jazz than rock most of the other songs just have rock incorparated into piano based songs and "Elect the Dead" itself is nothing but classical piano. With these different styles it really takes a new type of blindness to say that this stuff sounds like SOAD (again i'm a huge fan who looks into this stuff deeply). And so it doesnt really appeal to a metal fans but its still good music the lyrics here are good just take them at more than face value thats all. As for the video... come on the alligators cute admit it.
And as a finishing note for all the unjustified haters out there maybe the the title "Beethoven's ****" is showing that as Beethoven is a massive figure of musical genius that him being male therefore not having a **** shows that this song has nothing to do with good music.

having the talent to play several instruments is different than being able to do it well, and write quality music. im sure he does have some deep meaning behind this song, but i think that is poor song writing in the first place. you want something that isnt too vague, but doesnt give it all away. if people dont like this, you cant call them simple, or tools.

I always liked SOAD and so, but you have to admit (as I do) that this is very repetitive. He can be a genius or whatever you want, but this is just a softer version of SOAD. Can´t see the difference...

Serj is horrible, he sings the same way over and over again, the music softens when he sings a verse and speeds up on the chorus. Artistic? more like Autistic.
Who cares what the song means? A poet is a poet and a musician is a musician, similarities? Some yes, but if he is looking to get his meaning across, he should come up with songs people will listen to and enjoy, that nwe might care what his meaning is.
Also the name of Beethoven's Cunt. Is he trying to go underground with perverse names and lyrics? He must think that underground is "Cool" and that they will apreciate him if he becomes a contreversial artisit.
He tore apart S.O.A.D. for this crap? This is an attempt at trying to take Empty Walls and remake it so every one will like this song as well. One trick pony? I believe so. So stay tuned for the next installment of Serj Tankian's horrible attempts at song writing!

Serj is horrible, he sings the same way over and over again, the music softens when he sings a verse and speeds up on the chorus. Artistic? more like Autistic.

Any other subject and I wouldn't grace your sorry ass with a worthwhile response, but seeing as we are discussing a good musician here, I feel the need to show you that your opinion is dead wrong.
Firstly, you say that Serj sings the same every song, and that he sings soft in the verse and fast in the chorus. Does this mean that you hate everybody that does this? Did you not know that this can make songs interesting, rather that 10 minutes of blaring crap or 5 minutes of slow paced music that you are asleep by the end of it? Learn to write GOOD songs, and then maybe I will listen to your opinion.
You say that being a poet and a musician is different, and as true as that may be, where the hell do you think lyrics come from? Songs that you hear are pretty much just poems with music behind them. Get your facts straight before you try and sound all 'rly smrt'.
And I stated why the name 'Beethoven's Cunt' is effective earlier in this post, maybe you should read it you talent-blind dumbass.
Other than that, this video clip is very weird, but I like it so that makes it perfectly fine.

I have to agree with this, I thought this song was really bizarre and weird, but after giving it another listen, it is really awesome...and you have to admit, the drums are something that seems like Toxicity, as far as complexity in those little fills. I'm not a drummer though, so I don't know. Serj is very different compared to hiim being bound in System of a Down and thinking for 3 other people. But this is just who he is, even if it is a bit strange. I like the song, the video is pretty cool too.

even with the depth of his song its still a crappy song. if i had the access and knowledge to a home studio i most certainly would record my own shit, but you also need to realize that he has friends in the business and he has more access than a normal person would, just for being who he is would get him on a label.
as for the video: it does suck. i still blame him for the video because im sure he had to approve of the video before and after the shot.
and as for his lyrics, ive heard more lyrically complexities in my toilet bowl. if you want real deep lyrics read Opeth or Death's lyrics. or read a book for christ sakes.

This is song based mainly around vocals, so of course it's not going to sound like SOAD. People came into this expecting to hear SOAD like music. Well, guess what? It's Serj Tankian, not SOAD. He's not going to carry over SOAD's aggressiveness into his solo act, because, well, he's not the people that made up SOAD, he's not even the main songwriter. Daron Malakian was. +1 Serj is amazing even if you dont like his music hes a great artist! personally i like SOAD and Serj's solo stuff is ok from what ive heard so far.

+1 again Serj's voice is sooo unique anyway it doesnt really matter who is playing the instruments it will sound at least similar.

Look, the reason system was so good was that Serj, Daron, Shavo and John all collaborated and made something magnificent. Where as Serj, who CANNOT write melodies that match the greatness daron, fails this way. Serj was the lyrical creator, adding depth to the vocals of the band. He just has lost his way without the other band members. Scars on Broadway (Daron and John's Band NOW), is doing alright and have had a hit song or two, but still are not anywhere near the eccentricity that formally was.
